About 5-6 years ago, my Golden Retriever, Daffy, kept sitting by the kitchen counter every evening, staring at his empty bowl.
So I gave him a little extra food.
A few weeks later, his waist was gone, and that’s when I learned that a hungry-looking Golden Retriever doesn’t always need more food.
That mistake is why this site exists. I didn’t want other owners to make the same mistake.
My Experience
I’ve raised Daffy for 6+ years, from an 8-week-old puppy to the dog he is today.
In that time, I’ve dealt with puppy growth spurts, the overfeeding mistake that started this site, food changes, and adjusting his diet as he’s gotten older.
Daffy has taught me most of what’s on this site, usually the hard way.
That real, hands-on experience is what shapes every guide I write, not just research.
Meet Daffy
This is Daffy, the Golden Retriever who started it all.
He’s still food-motivated, still hopeful every time a door opens, and still the reason I double-check a feeding chart instead of just trusting my gut.
Everything on this site exists because of him.
Why I Started This Site
This site began as personal notes: feeding amounts, what worked, what didn’t.
Over time, it turned into the resource I wish I’d had when Daffy was a puppy: advice written just for Golden Retrievers, not generic dog care.
How I Research What I Write
Everything I write mixes two things:
- Real experience with Daffy.
- Research checked against trusted sources like WSAVA, AAFCO, FEDIAF, and the AKC breed standard.
I list my sources at the bottom of each article, so nothing here is a guess.
What I Bring, and What I Don’t

- A licensed vet, vet nutritionist, or certified trainer
